Oh what a fun evening! From the moment the motley band of pirates burst onto the stage it was non stop quality entertainment with lots of humour and beautiful singing. The handsome Frederick (Rob Durkin), having served his apprenticeship under the Pirate King (Mark Allan), is now ready to leave the pirate band. His devoted nurse Ruth (Stephanie Burgess) is devastated when Frederick discovers that there are younger more beautiful ladies than she on shore. One of these discoveries is Mabel (Nicky Burrows) a sweet singing daughter of the Major General (Angelo Clarke), and she instantly captures his heart. Complications then arise when it is revealed that Frederick was born on the 29th February and therefore is not yet twenty one and must return to the pirate fold for many years. This is ,of course, a simple interpretation of this complex story which, of course, ends happily ever after.
What wonderful singing from all the principals and chorus., they were a joy to listen to. The orchestra, under the direction of Mike Gilroy, brought new life to the score.
The on stage groupings were carefully thought out and the constant movement contrasted well to the usual quite static chorus we see with Gilbert and Sullivan.
The sets were simple and good lighting effects helped to with the change of mood. The costumes were eye catching and colourful.
All the comedy from the pirates and policemen did not detract from the more serious moments and these were dealt with sympathetically.
An excellent evening's entertainment which sent us away in a happy mood and singing the songs.
