Preston G & S Society opened their production of The Pirates of Penzance to a near capacity audience tonight and what an enjoyable evening it turned out to be. A rousing overture got the show off to a fine start. The orchestra, under the baton of M.D. Debbie Brotherton were to be an integral part of the undoubted success of the show. Innovative direction by Philip Walsh during the overture and the production as a whole, was very impressive. The minimal, well constructed sets and subtle lighting provided a great background for the cast. There were some very good performances from principal characters, particularly Lynne Nolan as Ruth. She brought her own boisterous interpretation to the role. I also enjoyed Martin Cassell as Sergeant of Police, very funny and a fine singing voice. I must say however, that this evening the main accolades must go to the ladies and gentlemen of the ensemble. Debbie Brotherton has brought out the best from them and they are to be congratulated on their exceptional singing. I have nothing but praise for their performance. It was very encouraging to see the wide range of age groups on stage which bodes well for the future of this particular genre. The whole production had a feel good factor to it with all members of the cast showing their enthusiasm and enjoyment. Costumes and properties were appropriate  for the piece and those on stage appeared completely relaxed in their various roles. Direction was interesting and imaginative which enabled the production to proceed at just the correct pace. It must have been heartening to all to hear that some of the performances had “sold out” in advance and it is hoped that this will be the case for future productions. Well done to all and thank you for your very warm welcome to my wife and myself.
