Worcester Gilbert & Sullivan Society – The Pirates of Penzance
Over the years Worcester Gilbert and Sullivan Society has gained a deserved reputation for the quality of its performances and this production was no exception. Once again the show Director Christine Davies has fashioned a presentation true to Gilbert and Sullivan’s traditions but with an array of humorous touches which I am sure would have delighted them both. Christine had at her command a cast which both individually and collectively has all the necessary flair, polish and poise expected of this Society. The singing and performances throughout were excellent with Paul Bellamy (Pirate King) leading the way with a swashbuckling performance. Rebecca Fearnley (Mabel), has a fine powerful soprano voice and an adept feeling for comedy. David Bell (Frederic) did well and Pauline Peak (Ruth), the Pirate maid of all work, sang and acted well. Mark Tooby (Major General Stanley) enjoyed himself hugely and performed his patter songs with aplomb. Tim Goodall was an impressive Sergeant of Police. Samuel (James Dhonau) and Edith (Bev Butler) in her first principal role with the Society completed a fine cast. Chorus singing and movement, lighting sound and costumes were of high standard and enhanced the whole performance.
