Where do I start with this report as there are endless compliments? In short, this production was fantastic. The Pirates of Penzance is probably my favourite G&S and I could honestly say this has surpassed any other I have seen to date. The attention to detail in set and costume was superb, and every ounce of fun and humour was drawn from the script by an absolutely stellar cast. Opening the show, Samuel, played by new member (James Napper) made his mark by hilariously 'camping up' his Jack Sparrow type character. Ruth (Lindsay Nurney) was perfectly cast. Her gun wielding solo, expressive duet with Fredrick and her perfect diction earned great credit. The rowdy, larger than life Pirate King was superbly played by Jason Reekie, showing great vocal strength and 'sending up' his opening number with impressive key change. The 'girls' entry added to the picturesque and humorous interpretation of the scene with Mabel (Katy Van der Burgh) treating the audience to an enchanting 'Poor Wandering One'. (John Neil) was the very able model of a modern Major-General commanding centre stage for a well presented
rendition. After a wonderful choral finale to Act one the transformation from rocky den to draughty ruin was simplistically effective for the wonderful venue. The 'squeaky' Policemen
caused a riot of laughter, with dead pan faces and excellent vocals. A well sung 'Parodox',
beautifulyl touching 'Stay, Fred'ric, Stay' and outstanding, heavy footed 'With Cat-Like Tread' all added to the fantastic entertainment. Huge applause due to Maureen for her inspired direction. Thank you once again for an outstanding treat.
