Wow what a production, what a night of pure delight. The curtain opened onto a super set by Scenic Projects.
In the lead role of ‘The Phantom’, Lewis Devitt acted and sang his heart out, on the night I came along I think his voice was possibly starting to get a little husky, but what a great job he did, he was a very visually convincing Phantom. Caris Kerr as Christine Daae was a dream, she blossomed before our eyes into a dramatic heroine, what a voice, and what a talent, well done. A first class performance as Raoul was given by Cameron Barlow, his duet with Christine ‘All I Ask of You’ was a gem, quite superb. I thought that Connor Wood as Firmin and Thomas Lowes as Andre, showed good chemistry between the two of them. The duo provided much of the humour and these two young actors took every opportunity to show off their talents. Catherine Andrews as the Opera singer Carlotta showed off her strong soprano voice and Sarah McDougall did well as the ballet mistress, Madame Giry.
All the smaller principle roles played a major part in making this a brilliant show and what delightful choreography. I very much enjoyed the opening of Act 2, with the chandelier and the staircase of the Opera House teeming with New Year revellers in fancy dress for a masked ball, very impressive.
This was a huge team effort, the costumes were beautiful, also impressive were make up and hair, the whole evening was a sheer delight, at times it was difficult to believe that I was watching a junior production.
Congratulations to the production team, back stage and front of house, lighting and sound and what can I say about the orchestra, except beautiful. Finally it was good to hear the National Anthem being played. Thank you all.
