Rotherham Rep ‘The Perfect Murder’ 16th September 2016
‘The Perfect Murder’ by Peter James, not to be confused with Henry James’ adaptation of the Jeffrey Archer book ‘The Perfect Murder’, is a black comedy.
Victor Smiley, confidently played by Mark Hone, is tired of his wife and quietly plans the perfect murder so that he can make a new life for himself with an upmarket Croatian sex worker he visits regularly. Janice Lewis successfully presents Kamila Walcak’s hopes and fears, that she will be released from her present life or that it is all a mirage.
Meanwhile wife Joan, played with excellent timing by Rosie Burke, decides that if Victor is not prepared to provide the romance she craves, she will set her own agenda.
Enter young buck Don who speaks in Cockney rhyming slang and likes ‘an older woman’! Steve Coward energetically enters into the spirit of the situation and is soon prepared to go along with Joan’s plans.
The split set worked well, although the numerous scene changes, with perfect, atmospheric background music, did contribute to a rather long ending.
Who will commit the perfect murder first? The red herrings are plentiful and the ending unexpected.
A good night’s entertainment, appreciated by the audience.
