It is quite a few years now since I saw "The Pajama Game" and I had forgotten just how many hummable songs it contained - Hey There, I'm Not at all in Love, Once a Year Day, Small Talk, Hernandoe's Hideaway, to name only a few and Carnoustie Musical Society did all the music proud with top class principal and chorus singing throughout. In the leading male role of Sid Sorokin Kevin Smith (who also produced the show) was in excellent form and his solos and duets with off stage wife Claire in the role of Babe Williams were of the highest standard as was Claire's portrayal of the head of the union's grievance committee. The plentiful comedy in the piece was in the more than capable hands of Carnoustie stalwarts Roger Brunton (loved the hair colour!) as Prez, head of the union and Joanna Fitzgerald as Gladys Hotchkiss the manager's secretary. Her accent in particular was superb. David Cheape stepped in at the last moment to cover for an absence due to illness and did an excellent job, as did other lesser principals Mike Burns (Hasler), Claire Ralston (Mabel), Pam Roach (Mae), Kerry Mitchell (Poopsie), Jim Robertson (Pop) and others too numerous to mention. Choreography was of a very high standard particularly in the second act numbers in Hornando's Hideaway - as was the production as a whole and obviously enjoyed by the audience. Well done, CMS.
