Good comedy requires exquisite timing if it is to be successful and this production certainly had plenty. It moved along at a brisk pace and there were many occasions when the actors had to pause for the laughter to subside before they could continue with the story.
The elderly pair of retired thespians were superbly characterised by Maureen George as Beatrice and Phil Shaw as her husband Charlie. They couldn’t accept that they were retired and settle to a ‘normal’ life. Beatrice, fed up of the bickering, decided to leave but knew that Charlie wouldn’t cope so she hatched a plot to leave him with their actor son and his actress ‘girlfriend’. Andy Jones as the son Jack and Angelique Runnalls-Bould as Maggie were excellent in their respective roles and worked together really well. She was obviously getting fed-up of the same old routines and he took everything for granted and was oblivious to her feelings for him. Zoe Matthews as the general factotum, Geraldine, in Jack’s household couldn’t be faulted. The character was so laid back as though she had seen it all before. All the characters were so believable in their respective roles that it made for an excellent evening’s entertainment. The solid looking set and properties enhanced the production. Congratulations to everyone involved!
