This society last performed ‘ The Music Man ‘ in 1995 at a High School and decided that the time was right to revive it and bring it to a bigger stage. Set in 1912 Iowa it tells the tale of Professor Harold Hill, Darrell Burns, who is a travelling salesman but has a reputation as a conman and trick artist. Things go well for him as he sets up a children’s band in River City and he sets out to woo the music teacher and librarian Marian Paroo, Charlotte Chambers. During this fast paced show we were treated to some lovely singing and acting from Charlotte and Darrell who were well supported by the remaining principals and chorus alike. I enjoyed Reg Morgan and producer Sharron Burns’ portrayal of Mayor and Mrs. Shinn, especially Sharron’s off key singing and anyone who knows Sharron knows that this was hard for her to do. The lighting was good as were the wonderful costumes. The Orchestra under the direction of Brian Hirst played well together. As I said, the music in this production stands out for me and the audience were joining in singing ’Seventy Six Trombones’ and ‘Good Night my Someone’. I also enjoyed hearing the ladies of the chorus singing’ Pick-a-little, Talk-a-little’ Sharron, you should be proud of this production and I look forward to seeing you all soon.
