In Your Face Theatre Seaham’s recent performance of Agatha Christie’s “The Mirror Crack’d” adapted by Rachel Wagstaff, proved to be a compelling and inventive production, demonstrating a remarkable evolution in the company’s artistry. Praise to Charlie Younger, Director for her innovative vision involving some striking staging, with the audience seated on two sides of the playing area, which fostered a sense of intimacy and immersion rarely achieved in traditional theatre layouts. This clever arrangement not only heightened the dramatic tension but also allowed for a more dynamic interaction between cast and spectators.
The use of sound and lighting throughout the performance was exceptionally skilful by Duncan Baxter of East Durham Audio and Paul Oliver of POSS Productions respectively. Strategic lighting transitions and well-timed sound effects were employed to delineate space and facilitate seamless scene changes, effectively conjuring different settings and moods within the same stage area. These technical elements were not merely decorative but integral to the storytelling, guiding the audience through the twists and turns of Christie’s mystery with finesse. The set, expertly handled by stage manager Luke Baker and his able crew was designed, dressed and moved seamlessly adding to the storytelling with special effects and tricks well and truly keeping the audience on their toes. Costuming was appropriate and well styled adding to the effect of the piece.
The cast delivered a series of excellent performances, with each member bringing nuance and energy to their role. It was clear that the cast has developed significantly, exhibiting greater confidence and depth in characterisation. Their commitment to the material ensured that the suspense and intrigue of the story were maintained throughout, keeping the audience thoroughly engaged. “The Mirror Crack’d” was staged with professionalism and creativity, making it a standout production in the local theatre scene.
The entire cast delivered incredible personal performances, consistently delivering professionalism alongside their storytelling. Jane Marple was played by Fiona Donald, a prior performance award winner and she very much reminded everyone why with her presence on stage and delivery. Cherry Baker was played by the beautiful Jade Carney, subtly adding clues to the mystery without bringing anything away from the plot; Dermot Craddock by Dan Riches who is going from strength to strength with his performance level and increasing confidence; Heather Leigh, the key role by Rachael Riches was played gently and concisely; Cyril Leigh by Karl Smith acted extremely well given poor Mr Leigh is somewhat overlooked throughout the poor soul; Jason Rudd played by Ian Patterson as the dashing charming aristocrat, husband of Marina Gregg played by Melanie Hill with a gentle softness; Giuseppe Renzo played by the wonderful Jake Marshall as the dashing Italian waiter; Dolly Bantry was played by Catherine Bartley with such a strong performance well out of her comfort zone; Ella Zielinsky played by Helen Brewis with sharp professionalism; Lola Brewster played by the stunningly talented Jade-Leigh Hewitt and The Ad played by Peter Kelly. Their teamwork along with the team at IYFTS made for a slick performance which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Well done IYFTS another resounding success in the bag!
