Rugby Operatic Society performed Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado”. The Mikado follows the story of Ko-Ko, who as Lord High Executioner has been asked tasked by the Mikado to hold an execution. He enlists the help of Nanki-Poo who has returned to Titipu in hopes of marrying Yum Yum who, is engaged to KoKo.
The principle cast was full of talent. Kim Arnold (Pitti-Sing) and Lucy Lee (Peep-Bo) who brought comedy to their roles and had wonderful chemistry.
Elizabeth Brooks (Katisha) Peter Brooks (The Mikado) had slightly smaller roles but both gave strong performances with each other and the company.
Stuart Esworthy (Pooh-Bah) played his role, and the many other roles his character had flawlessly. Peter Privett (Pish-Tush) also gave a strong performance, both entertaining to watch.
Simon Lucas (Ko-Ko) plays the role with ease and enthusiasm. Becky Walton (Yum-Yum) and Ben Wellicome (Nanki-Poo), complete the principle cast, they had confidence and fantastic characterisation which led to excellent performances.
The entire principle cast had wonderful vocals and gave a strong performance.
The chorus numbers were beautifully executed by all. The set was a simple design and worked very well on a smaller stage as too much would have taken away from a fantastic performance. The costumes were beautifully traditional and very suited to the performance.
