What an excellent way to celebrate the company`s 50th Anniversary with Andrew`s innovative production of the The Mikado. From the opening chorus of the gentlemen attired as city business men in pinstripes, bowlers and brollies, allied with the ladies in `office` dress, and schoolgirls in St Tinian’s style attire, this was an entertaining adaptation that I am sure Gilbert and Sullivan themselves would have thoroughly enjoyed.
A most talented cast were epitomised by a stand-out performance by Alan Smith as Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, who in the guise of a tailor, was a comic tour-de-force. He had the audience captured throughout, and I loved his up-to-date `Little List` - brilliant. Stephen Godward as Pooh-Bah was also in fine form as the minister of everything, using his superb voice and imperious presence to great effect. Andrew Dennis as Nanki-Poo, and Sharon Cutworth as Yum-Yum complemented each other admirably, both vocally excellent. John Carter as Pish-Tush, Jo Hutchesson as Pitti-Sing, and Beth Bucknall as Peep-Bo, provided great support. And as the last character to appear, Matthew Siveter as The Mikado, did not disappoint, he was impressive in both character and voice. A great performance.
With a strong and effective chorus, the production was well staged, and costumed, and complemented by a super orchestra. A top quality performance.
