For a cast struck by the dreaded lurgy it was hard to tell. Yes the odd voice cracked and the high notes were a little elusive but on the whole, it really was a super show. This Mikado was traditional and although the patter song was studded with topical references, it was really nice to see a show that I remember as one of my first operatic memories. The costumes were beautifully traditional too; fantastic colours and style.

Each principal character did really well; Mark Beaton was very funny as Ko-Ko, Jess Squire certainly hit the high notes well as Katisha and even with a heavy cold Jim Smith excelled as Pooh-Bah; the various accents he used to define the role of Pooh-Bah were brilliant. Everyone should be pleased with their performances. The harmonies that the ensemble produced were great but I thought that the quartet harmonies were very well defined and lovely.

I really did have a lovely time and as I was there on the opening night, as long as the voices held up, I am sure they had a fabulous run.
