~~I have never been a big fan of G & S but I have to say I really enjoyed this production. Kate Wilson led the company well as Yum-Yum, in this, her first major lead role. The clarity of her voice was superb. Mark Ellse as Nanki-Poo gave a good strong performance. Phill Howard was an outstanding Pooh-Bah, surely a role made for him. Robert Mead as Ko-Ko gave his usual polished performance. I really enjoyed hearing him sing ‘I’ve got a little list’ which was so topical and up to date! ‘On a Tree by a river’ was a delight. Janet James gave us a brilliant performance as Katisha (I never realised she could be so evil). Bill Rogers in the title role also gave a strong performance.
The set, thought simple, was effective and worked well on the Old Rep stage. The costumes, all made by members of the company, were good and very colourful.
Martin Fautley led the orchestra well, and he cut out the long overture, which made a refreshing change.
Janet Davies should be proud of this production, as should all of the company
