The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan's best known comic operas, after watching Blackburn Gilbert and Sullivan Society's version we can both see why it has been well loved for so long. The show took us to Japan and tells a story about politics, power and above all love which is combined with some classic G and S comedy, melodies and signature songs.

The opening introduced us to the Japanese city of Titipu with the full men's chorus on stage in colourful costume. Their opening routine was very well received due to their choreographed movements. This appreciation was sustained throughout the whole show. Later in Act 1 we meet the ladies chorus also colourful dressed and they too pleased the audience throughout.

Act 2 got off to a very lively start and the first numbers were of a quicker pace which captivated the audience. This section of the show was a highlight for ourselves.

The principle cast worked very well together and their teamwork and dedication shone through within their performance. Some late cast changes did not seem to detract from the overall quality of the production and the society should be proud of their adaptability to cope with such things. Some good comedy elements happened on stage with laughing and titters being heard from the audience throughout. The modern day influences on script changes definitely added to the show.

The sound and lighting were good and the whole society supported the cast adequately. On occasion some of the libretto was lost but the story was portrayed very well. The orchestra sounded good and their musical dynamics were appreciated as never did they overpower the cast.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable show which entertained and brought smiles to people faces. We both look forward to seeing the society's next production.
