First produced in 1885 and on countless occasions since, this comic opera has acquired the distinction of being the most frequently performed of Gilbert and Sullivan’s collaborative works. What makes it so popular? Firstly, there is the appeal of Sullivan’s music; certainly the superb way in which it was performed by the orchestra in this production, under the direction of Rodney Dawkins, did much to explain its popularity. Then there is the considerable number of opportunities for the introduction of topical comedic comment and activity such as Director Alex Moores judiciously incorporated into Gilbert’s libretto. It is a combination of these two factors which I think generates the strong appeal to audiences. Those taking the principal roles in this production were well cast and all delivered competent performances; putting their considerable vocal talents to fine use and delivering the dialogue with clarity and distinction. The costumes were colourful and well fitting, the set appropriately designed and sturdily constructed. The overall effect of this society’s efforts resulted in a production that delighted the appreciative audience keen to register their approval throughout. Congratulations to all involved in the delivery of this wonderful entertainment.
