Tettenhall Operatic Society performed a concert version of "The Merry Widow" and on the whole this was a very competent production. Diction of the soloists and chorus was excelent throughout and the narration by Anne Woolley was clear and expressive.
There were times when I felt the performance a little flat, somewhat without emotion, and I can't help feeling that this was due to the use of libretti! This was particularly apparent when Danilo declared his love for Anna and read it from the book!
Julian Souter was excellent as Baron Zeta but Danilo (Mike Rawlings) and Camille (Geoff Silk) struggled with their solos, at times not quite reaching the notes.
Anna (Sue Rawlings) and Valencienne (Jayne Butler) played their parts very well but at times the voices were a little harsh.
Hearing comments later it seems that the ladies in the audience were very impressed with Anna's beautiful parasol for her ride in the park!
Despite my reservations I enjoyed the concert - "The Merry Widow" waltz still echoing in my head for days after the show.
