For lovers of the good old fashioned musicals you could not have bettered this production.
With super sets, gorgeous costumes, wonderful sound and lighting. Adding to this a great orchestra under the baton of Rod Dakin, this was a recipe for a super show. Together with some fabulous singing, what more could an audience ask for.
Taking the lead of Anna Glavaria, the wealthy widow was Eileen Reeves who sang faultlessly throughout. Supported by her real life husband David playing Danilo they sang duets and solos beautifully.
Typical of such stories we find intrigue and flirtations in the Embassy. Baron Zeta well played by David Kay caused problems as he demands that Danilo returns to marry Anna thus keeping her fortune in the Fatherland. Then he fails to realise that his wife is flirting with Count Camille.
His wife Valencienne(Victoria Goulden) was stunning with a lovely voice and Camille(David Griffiths) were well matched and sang so well together.
A most amusing part was taken by Colin Magenty playing the Baron`s factotum Njenus. He tries so hard to protect members of the Embassy from discovering who is unfaithful or not .
The chorus in this show sang really well. I especially enjoyed the mens chorus number `Women, Women,Women.` Together with well known pieces `Vilia` sung by Anna, The duet `Driving in the Park with You` and of course `The Merry Widow Walz` all were so well sung.
I must complement the young dancers who danced beautifully and of course The Grisettes.
The show was just right for a warm summer evening. Thank you so much for your kind invitation.
