This classic musical fantasy was an inspired choice for the Youth Theatre. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1836 story, the tale is about the beautiful young mermaid Ariel who longs to leave behind her home in the ocean (and her tail and fins) and live on land and to convince the handsome Prince Eric that she is the girl with the enchanting voice he has heard from the deeps.
Sarah Smillie took the role of Ariel with Katie Wood as her best friend Flounder. Sebastian (Abbey Bone) is a caring and anxious crab who does her best to keep Ariel safe. King Triton (David Mackenzie) is ruler of the undersea kingdom and not someone to be trifled with. But he has an adversary in Ursula (Sarah Carruthers), the wicked sea witch who seeks to overthrow the King. She is supported by a group of poor unfortunate souls called the Tentacles who are trapped in her lair. The Mersisters Aquata (Hannah Keenan), Andrina (Mya Gillespie), Arista (Amber Griffiths), Atina (Nina Mastrangioli), Adella (Sara Todd) and Allana (Eilidh McCartney), all siblings of Ariel created their own distinctive characters. Ursula has two slippery and electric eel-spies Flotsam (Eilidh Brown) and Jetsam (Laura Murney).
On the land surface, Prince Eric (Jamie Porter) has the support of four Princesses, Chef Louis (Melissa Keay) and Carlotta (Olivia Churcher). The remaining principals, a goodly number of sailors and numerous Sea Creatures and Gulls completed the comprehensive and talented cast – and needless to say, the story ended happily.
