The 2026 pantomime season has kicked off with Bishop Auckland Theatre Society (BATS) presenting its annual pantomime, ‘The Little Mermaid’, with performances scheduled at Bishop Auckland Town Hall. This production, co-directed by Matthew Harper and Brenna Finn, incorporated a fresh script and notable technical enhancements.

The script, by Matthew Harper, stands out for its invigorated storytelling, improved pacing, and enhanced comedic timing. These refinements have contributed to a more engaging audience experience which we thoroughly enjoyed.  Direction by both Matthew Harper and Brenna Finn proved highly effective, with clear vision and strong leadership evident throughout the production.

Choreography for the production was skilfully devised by Ruth Stapleton, whose dynamic routines brought energy and precision to musical numbers whilst remaining an inclusive experience for the cast. Stapleton’s dual role as Princess Coral was equally impressive, displaying notable stage presence and technical proficiency, with a stunning voice which never fails to deliver. The choreography added vibrancy to group scenes, contributing positively to the overall pace and entertainment value.

The principal cast delivered performances of a consistently high standard. Emma Westwood’s portrayal of Prospera the Sea Witch was memorable for its nuance and vocal prowess. Sam Phillipson brought infectious humour and timing to the role of Captain Staines, engaging the audience with wit and charm. Ian College’s Dame, Regina Kayla provided classic pantomime entertainment, with effective comedic delivery and audience interaction and a stunning Scout themed wardrobe! Nick Taylor, as Ollie the Octopus, demonstrated heartwarming humour and a natural rapport with both cast and audience in a very original role. Matthew Harper played a dashing charismatic Prince Felix, whilst Grace Bonallie was a beautiful and likeable Fairy Persil. Paula Taylor as Blobfish, Prospera’s hench-fish had us all entertained with her incredible facial expressions and comic delivery.

The entire cast and ensemble contributed significantly to the production’s overall impact, with particular commendation for those making their BATS debut. The enthusiasm and commitment of first-time performers were evident, enriching group scenes and supporting principal roles with confidence and skill. Their achievements reflect the inclusive ethos of the society and augur well for future productions.

Costume design and production by Brenna Finn, was a standout feature, with vibrant colours and imaginative styling enhancing characterisation and spectacle. Technical aspects, including lighting and sound, complemented the visual presentation and contributed to a seamless production environment.

‘The Little Mermaid’ pantomime marks a notable success for Bishop Auckland Theatre Society. The improved script, strong direction, and choreography have elevated the standard of production, while the cast’s performances and costume quality have contributed to a memorable theatrical experience. Future productions will benefit from maintaining this high standard and nurturing emerging talent within the society.  Very much looking forward to your 2026 exploits!
