Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's stories and the classic animated film, Disney's ‘The Little Mermaid’ is centred around a mermaid who dreams of the world above the sea and gives up her voice to find true love. This love story took us “under the sea” with Ariel, the beautiful young little mermaid who longed to leave her home on the ocean floor to live in the world above. Anne Rice provided a delightful and flawless performance through song and drama wanting to be ‘Part of Your World’. Sebastian, the meticulous and anxious crab trying to keep Ariel safe, was ably played by Grant-Scott Johnston. Becky Blyth brought great humor as the rather eccentric seagull Scuttle. Andrew Tasker made a perfect adventurous Prince Eric who eventually captured Ariel’s heart and James Cassidy was well cast as King Triton ruler of the sea and strict but caring father of his youngest daughter Ariel. Nikki Johnstone was at ease being at the centre of the villainous plot as the cunning and devious Ursula and sister of Triton in her attempts to get Ariel’s voice in return for Ariel to become human. Nikki’s delivery of ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ was absolutely fabulous, delivered with such power and passion. Other strong principals included Catriona Turk as Flounder, Ariel’s loyal companion; Paul Grimsby, Eric’s nautical expert pilot and adviser; Chris Hogg as Chef Louis; Susan MacFarlane and Leigh-Anne Struthers as Ursula’s sly and slippery henchmen and let us not forget Mersisters/Princesses Niamh Brooks, Evie McDonald, Kim Fraser, Jennifer Hughes, Amy Sutherland and Elaine Dawson. The entire company collectively gelled well together. Musical numbers from principals and the full ensemble were powerfully delivered and choreography was sharp and engaging. Costumes were spectacularly colourful which was further enhanced with the vibrant colours generated from the LED panel which depicted the magical merfolk Kingdom on the ocean floor and the world above. This was a magical production and well done to all involved.
