~~As a fan of the original 1955 Ealing film, I was eager to see the Grange Players latest offering and once again they didn’t disappoint.
The story is about a gang of robbers hiding out in a lopsided guest house in Kings Cross posing as an amateur string quartet who have absolutely no idea how to play instruments, planning a major heist. What they didn’t bank on was the tea making Landlord, Mrs Wilberforce quickly uncovering their plot with fatal consequences.
Director Rosemary Manjunath assembled a brilliant cast with Dexter Whitehead as “Professor Marcus” the brains behind the organisation. Joseph Hicklin has some deliciously funny lines as the ex boxer “One Round” with good support from Les Wilkes as “Constable Macdonald”, Mary Whitehouse as “Mrs Wilberforce” aided by her trusty Parrot “General Gordon”, Alex Barzdo as “Major Courtney”, Rod Bissett as “Harry Robinson”, Christopher Waters as the Romanian gangster “Louis Harvey” and Elizabeth M. Smith as “Mrs Jane Tromleyton”. I was also impressed by the attention to detail in the stage setting and props particularly the lopsided house with furniture moving about and pictures falling off the wall when a nearby train passes. Well done to all concerned, another fabulous production.
