The 1955 film, “The Ladykillers” has been adapted for the stage by Graham Linehan who has written comedy scripts for T.V. He has successfully used the characters from the original and injected his own interpretation of this classic piece. This was not an easy play to stage but the Hall Players are to be congratulated on rising to the challenge. Mark Gee, Set Designer and Constructor and his team have produced an excellent, elaborate, solid and complex set incorporating some splendid innovations which was well dressed, with an authentic 1950’s look. Good use of projection enabled the audience to see some of the action played away from the stage. Sound and lighting effects were first class. Carol Buckley has worked well with the cast to produce a very funny, physical and certainly lively production. Maureen Nickson as Mrs Louisa Wilberforce played the role in the manner in which the author always intended. John Nickson as Professor Marcus was outstanding. His excellent characterization and his comic timing were just what we have come to expect from this first class actor. I also enjoyed Dominic Swarbrick’s performance as Louis, a great character. The “Musical Concert “ for Mrs Wilberforce and guests was hilarious and was another highlight of this excellent production with some subtle touches from the female “friends”. The reaction from the capacity audience was indicative of their appreciation of a very enjoyable evening.
Congratulations to all concerned.
