Walkerville Musical Society put on a very entertaining performance of the classic “The King and I” with enthusiasm and aplomb at the Walkerville Community Centre. The talented cast transported a packed house to the exotic location of Siam, adeptly represented on stage, treating them to fresh renderings of familiar songs like “Getting to Know You” and “Whistle a Happy Tune” and an enthralling story deftly told. The accomplished cast gave a professional take on Rogers’ and Hammerstein’s celebrated musical supported by a talented orchestra and proficiently delivered staging. The company’s achievements are heightened because putting on such a show in a small all-purpose building is challenging and, as sister organisations will know, audiences are difficult to attract and the logistics don’t get easier. But Walkerville pulled it all off and, even though the story ends on a sad note, the audience went home with their hearts uplifted and the company fulfilled with a production well done. The production team of Producer Ann Ranson, Musical Director Peter Forster, Accompanist Peter Allsop and Choreographer Helen Wilson were well supported by the cast headed by Brian Harland, Archer/William Metcalf, Lisa Givens, Stuart Dowson, Ken Richardson, Alan Tomkins, Ian Nugent, Sharon Gauld, Katy Ross, James Metcalf, and David Parrack.
