Although written just over 60 years ago this dark comedy is perhaps more relevant today than it was shocking back in the 60s. June Buckridge stars as Sister George, a kind district nurse in a radio soap opera. But off-air, June is an abusive bully to her flatmate, Alice ‘Childie’ McNaught. When BBC executive Mrs. Mercy Croft informs June that the show's low ratings require drastic changes, June seeks advice from her mystic neighbour, Madame Xenia.
The action takes place in the main living area of June and Alice’s flat. A nice well thought out set with suitable furnishings. Props were excellent, especially all those flower arrangements! The subtle lighting was just as it should be – subtle.
Seasoned performer Linda Russell as June/Sister George has great stage presence and brings this difficult character to life with her mannerisms and facial expressions. Jenny McKiernan as ‘Childie’ was able to show her vulnerability as the abused partner but then the feistiness surfaces, another difficult character to portray but done so well. The chemistry between the two main characters worked well and diction from both was impeccable. Maureen Gardner as Mrs Mercy Croft could have come across as more ruthless in manipulating the situation but her tenderness towards Alice was commendable. Margaret Bown as Madame Xenia gave a standout performance, adding lightness to the play. However, Maureen and Margaret's dialogue projection needed to match that of Linda and Jenny.
Despite initial challenges, Hartley Players delivered a professional production, guided by Director David Street and supported by four talented cast members.
