The Hunchback of Notre Dame was presented by Huddersfield Light Opera Company (HLOC) and it was remarkable. A grand theatrical spectacle, huge in scale and presence.
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" Disney stage musical is a compelling adaptation of the classic Victor Hugo novel and the animated Disney film. With music by Alan Menken, lyrics courtesy of Stephen Schwartz and book by Peter Parnell, this production delivered the very high expectations that this show demands and the all-important casting of the principals and company, was exactly right with each performer The musical takes the audience on a journey through the cobblestone streets of Paris, exploring themes of acceptance, love, and the power of standing up for what is right.

Dom Moccia was the title character of Quasimodo who is the kind-hearted and gentle soul who is confined to the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral due to his physical deformity. Dom was completely immersed as he shared with the audience the cruelty he faced from society, whilst he maintains his optimism and idealism. Throughout the performance Dom never broke from the physically difficult character to portray and was sympathetic in his delivery.

Esmeralda is a strong, independent, and compassionate gypsy who becomes a symbol of hope for both Quasimodo and the outcasts of Paris. Laura Peters showcased her fierce determination and unwavering spirit, but also her kindness and bravery. Laura sang beautifully and this made her a beloved character in the musical.

Phoebus De Martin, the noble and honourable captain of the guard was played fabulously by Craig Squance. Phoebus serves as a romantic interest for Esmeralda. He represents justice and integrity, standing in stark contrast to Frollo's villainy. Craig was perfect as he offered a lighter dynamic to the productions darker moments. A very accomplished performer in all departments.

Clopin Trouillefou was played with great charm by Nimi Oyeyemi. Is a character more complex that he first appears. Starting out quite happy but becoming more darker as the story progresses. Clopin needs an actor to carry the conscience of the audience threw the journey and Nimi was excellent. Huge physicality and warmth in abundance, he delighted the audience with his charm and talent.

Gareth Dickinson was Dom Claude Frollo, the complex and villainous antagonist of the story. He is a corrupt minister who is obsessed with power and control. Gareth squeezed every ounce of Frollo's inner conflict between his religious duty and his desires. Frollo drives much of the conflict in the musical and it needs a performer up to the task, Gareth was more than up to it. A true powerhouse performance with some of the best singing I have heard in many a year. Every time he entered the stage his presence demanded your full attention.

No production is complete without a company to support the undoubtably talented main cast. There was a cast of 25 acting as anything from Gargoyles ( Ben Maffin – Holly Comber Moccia – Tom Waltham – Sharon Whitehead – Isabelle Barker – Jonny Kain – Kimberley Booth – Toby Kershaw and Victoria Taylor) to villagers, soldiers and gypsies (Adam Peel – Grahame Whitehead – Steve Crowther – Abigail Webster – Amy Blackburn – Beth Dickinson – Caz Brough – Dan Fallows – Emily Sullivan – Emma Sykes – Kate Smillie – Katie Beadle – Katie McKay – Laura Barrett – Susan Roberts) adding to the spectacular choir of 17 (Alexa Nicoll – Emidio Zamberlan – Hannah Potter – Jo Brown – Judy Dennet – Keira Watson – Liza Knight – Martin Stead – Mike Gillet – Ned Smith – Rebecca Mosley – Rebekah Barker – Richard Cook – Samuel Lockwood – Selwyn Hill – Shivonne Smith – Susan Stott) who never left the stage once the acts began, were every bit as integral to the success of this show and they all had the talent required to add the extra layers required through solid characters and sublime singing.

A musical, no matter how good the cast are, is nothing without a solid and capable production team. Choreography was in the safe hands of both Pam Strickland and Zoe Cook and this dynamic duo brought fantastic movement which was fitting to the production. I have seen many shows where the kitchen sink is thrown at almost every routine but this had subtle levels and it was a joy to watch.

Chris Brearley as Artistic Director and Producer is in my eyes on of the most accomplished directors I have seen. You can tell Chris still performs as his use of the stage comes from that perspective which in turn brings out the best in his cast and company. Chris was also involved in the lighting design which was truly stunning. The stage was adorned with candles giving a gothic touch and the mood and scenes moved with some effective lighting.

What is a musical without great musical direction. Scott Kitchen needs a special mention in this regard. Coupled with a very polished pit orchestra, the music for Hunchback was supremely good and was pivotal in conveying all the drama and romanticism. Scott was also Choir Master and for this all I can say is WOW!!! I had goosebumps on top of goosebumps. Working alongside Jon Hudson as Sound Designer, the audience had a sound that was faultless and professional.

A scaffolded set by Scenic Projects Ltd represented Notre Dame, and I loved how the levels changed by the lowering of flags or bells. A professional set professionally implemented by the stage crew. Costumes were quite spectacular and enhanced by some equally impressive make up and hair. My upmost congratulations must go to the unsung heroes who deliver this extra level of polish.

This is not a show with a happy ending, however stunning singing and amazing acting, speed us through the plot.

HLOC must be congratulated  for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".  It is a visually stunning production that delves deep into some very complex themes, some of which are maybe even more relevant today and features a cast of memorable characters performed by some very talented actors. The musical's powerful storytelling, breathtaking music, and emotional performances make it a must-see for fans of the original film and newcomers alike.

My upmost congratulations to all involved with the production and to all at HLOC. Thank you so much for the very warm welcome and hospitality and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
