Written by Hugh Janes and adapted from the ghost stories of Charles Dickens, this definitely was a spine chilling story.
Janes’s story takes us to a cob-webbed study in an old isolated manor house. Here I must say how wonderful the set was which was built by the Sutton Arts Theatre set construction team. The old Lord has died and his heir, wanting to pay off debts, has called in a book seller to value the collection. David Filde has a secret to hide, which we find out at the end of the play. He is eager to do his job but starts to hear a girl’s voice and hear strange noises in the house. The new Lord Gray refuses to accept that the room they are in may be haunted.
Mark Nattrass as Lord Gray and Tom Cooper as David Filde gave powerful performances. They were supported well by Sydney Richmond as Spirit. This play must have been difficult to learn for the two male leads as they had so much dialogue to learn but they did, with great results, and without any prompts.
The special effects, lighting and sound worked well with doors banging and books flying off the shelves, very spooky.
Congratulations to all involved with this dramatic piece of theatre.
