Summer is usually a difficult time for rehearsals as actors seem to expect to take holidays! This first production in the Grange Players season was no exception and Dexter Whitehead play director told me that 70% of the actors taking roles in the production were "beginners" with the Players.
I viewed the play with an open mind never having seen the Margaret Rutherford/Joyce Grenfell film. I nwas probably the only one in the audience who hadn't! The action for the play took place in the Masters' Common Room at the School for boys in 1948. When the school is invaded by the pupils from a girls school high jinks and misunderstandings abound.
On the night I attended I thought the audience unresponsive to the actors and reluctant to laugh out loud at a lot of fun things that were happening on stage. To me it was a good night's entertainment and I hope to see more of the "beginners" in the future.
