Famous for his notable `Gaslight`, this play by Patrick Hamilton, set in an upper class home in the 1850`s doesn`t quite have the same appeal.
A baby is stolen and suspicion falls on the Drew family and their staff. Martin Illston, as George Drew, gave an impressive performance as the strict overpowering Victorian husband, supported well by Sue Orme as Winifred, his neurotic down-trodden wife. Rick Law played their son Robert with lively competence. Newcomer, May Rigg, was convincing as daughter Kate, although I did not catch all of her dialogue. As Miss Fry, the Governess, Julie Campbell gave a respectable account in her role of the scheming villainess. Mike Asprey as Detective Inspector Rough, livened up the proceedings on his arrival on the scene, to complete what was a somewhat predictable outcome. As always, the set was first-rate.
Not the best Marlowe piece, but that is probably down to the `car and not the driver`.
