Thank you for inviting Phyllis and myself to review your production of The Gondoliers. It was lovely to see so many people in the Village Hall still interested in keeping live performances of the Savoy Operettas alive.
The scenery of the Venice landscapes was excellent, very well done to scenic artist Stewart Williams. The lighting was good throughout the performance. The costumes were good and suited the period and it was good to see attention to detail with the footwear and accessories. The orchestra led by David Tattersall were excellent. It was good to hear the music never overpowering the performers which isn’t always the case when there is no orchestra pit. The tempos were kept lively and bright throughout.
All the principal characters played their parts well. There were some super voices and lovely facial expressions, well done to you all. The stand out performance for me was Peter Bowden as the wonderfully over the top Duke of Plaza Toro. He certainly threw himself into the part with great aplomb. Some excellent singing and purposeful movement from the ensemble all helped to keep the production moving at a good pace.
Well done Hannah for taking on the duel role of producer and choreographer, as well as playing the part of Tessa. She clearly enjoyed the benefits of a strong well cast and talented group. Quite an achievement.
Thank you once again for an enjoyable evening.
