It is a wonderful sight to walk into a full house for a production even if around 85% of the punters are ladies baying for the sight of naked men and of course they were not to be disappointed on this occasion.
From the opening when a lone stripper walked on stage it was screams and wolf whistles all round from the ladies, and maybe one or two men in the audience who cheered him on through his performance.
I would imagine the majority of people will have seen the film The Full Monty and may have been expecting the action to take place in Sheffield but of course the stage show is set in Buffalo, New York and all the characters delivered their lines to perfection in their (new) accents.
The six main characters in this show are the guys who end up as strippers to earn some money, these were played brilliantly by Richard Wilshaw as Jerry Lukowski, Chris Badham as Dave Bukatinsky, Alan Mitchell as Harold Nichols, Geoff Fenwick as Malcolm MacGregor, Adam Wigglesworth as Ethan Girard and Tony Bubb, who was making his stage debut as Noah (The Horse) T Simmons. They were all perfect for their respective parts and sang and danced their way through the entire show. Some notable songs were Tony Bubb with his rendition of 'Big Black Man' which had the audience wanting more and the very touching duet 'You Walk With Me', between Geoff Fenwick and Adam Wigglesworth during the funeral scene. I would imagine the majority of the audience felt both the pathos and the humour of this song between two guys who ended up holding hands which did not go unnoticed by their fellow strippers.
There were too many good performances in this show to be able to mention them all but this was certainly a show which, although I suspect was a gamble, was certainly one which paid off both in terms of society successes and also audience enjoyment.
Thank you Maltby for a great evening’s entertainment.
