This adaptation of the film of the same name certainly proved a winner with CMTS and their audience. On the last performance the theatre was full to overflowing and most definitely attracted many people who perhaps had not been to see this society before?
It was a big risk for the group to step away from their more traditional type of musicals and for this show it appeared to have paid off. It will be interesting to see how many people who had not supported the society before will continue to do so for the long term. This is a show which depends hugely on getting the male leads cast, and apart from a few principal ladies of course the whole story revolved around the guys and a variety of characters to boot, so it was good to see so many guys when many groups now find difficulty in recruiting men. Alex Lockert as Malcolm Macgregor Simon Brett as Dave Bukatinsky Charlie Vaughan as Ethan Girard Peter Spilling as Jerry Lukowski and Marley Njie as “Horse” were the main characters and gave interesting takes on their very different characters.
OTT was needed in this show in almost all these characters and well done to you all for being brave enough to reveal almost everything!!!
Neil Murphie as Harold Nichols and Sharon Giles as Vicki his wife both did very well with good clear dialogue and entered into the spirit of the show with energy. Tracey William as Jeanette Burmeister the effervescent pianist was excellent as also was Katie Leech as Georgie Bukatinsky both with great stage presence. Emily Aldis was pretty convincing as Pam Lukowski with a good feel for the part and Daniel Williams as her son Nathan did well but needed more punch with his dialogue which was rather unemotional. George Buxton as Teddy Slaughter looked rather like Pam’s toy boy perhaps this was intended?
The cheer leaders were great. Jessica Ashlea Angie and others, great fun parts.
Whether it was the sound system or balance of band against voices I found the band really loud. One or two characters came over very well against this big sound from the band, but many did not. It is essential to check the balance both without an audience in the theatre and then again with a full house to get it spot on.
The set was fine and costumes and lighting especially the brilliance of the neon lighting at the finale really was superb.
I applaud you for your brave choice and wish you well for the forthcoming productions.
