Over 50 members of the group, aged between 8 and 16 years old, took to the stage to perform this comedy musical full of eccentric characters and with a lively rock score and even a line dance. The Zombies and Vampires are unhappy with their life underground and call on Count Dracula, a strong performance by Gregor Phimimster, to do something. He calls on his friend the Queen of the Night, an excellent Emily Watt, to help him and they decide to create a rock group so that the Zombies and Vampires can mix unnoticed with humans at rock concerts. Auditions follow (with more than a nod to the swivelling chairs of The Voice) and Jagged Mick (Dillon Third) and the Blood Sisters (the very tuneful Katie Matthew, Alix Sharp and Jess Manson) are formed. During the group’s tour it is noticed there is a marked increase in the number of bodies of young girls found suffering from anaemia and the intrepid Inspector Shirley Holmes and her trusty side-kick Dr Watson (strongly played by Hannah Clail and Ross Conn) set out to discover the reason. Along the way they come across Professor Moriarty (another good performance from Lisa Reidel) and his gang of criminals. Much hilarity ensues, with lots of singing and movement from the enthusiastic cast, until Shirley Holmes finally arrest her nemesis Moriarty and the Zombies and Vampires decide to return to their underground home for good. Special mention must be made of the touching performances of Robert Kennedy and Emily Brown, as the outcasts among outcasts Vladimir and Zazu, who find love when left to care take the other world. The members of this company always give their all to their performances and their enthusiasm was greatly received by the Sunday matinee full house audience. A show such as this takes a lot of work to put on and thanks should go to all those set builders, costume makers, make up artists etc as well. Well done everyone at Haddo Children’s Theatre.
