Following a highly successful run in the West End and at various venues nationwide, this murder mystery has recently become available for the amateur theatre. After watching the performance by Rotherham Rep, I was thoroughly impressed and felt as though I was seeing a professional production. With a cast of ten exceptional actors of which six took on numerous roles, and a highly professional approach to direction, this was indeed an outstanding production.
The minimalist set, comprised of large wooden boxes serving both as seating and storage for various props, ensured that the cast rarely left the stage. This was complemented by exceptional back projection, sound, orchestral effects and lighting, all of which greatly enhanced the production. It was clear from the start that this would be an excellent evening’s entertainment.
We follow the life of Christoher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy suffering with Asperger’s Syndrome who is a mathematical genius with great inspirations to become a scientist or an astronaut. He tries to cope with everyday life in his own way but at times all he really wants is peace and quiet. The play opens with Christopher discovering the body of the neighbour’s dog and with determination he sets out to solve the mystery. Christopher’s mother passed away two years ago and life at home has been difficult. However, after discovering letters from her, it transpired that his father had lied to him and that his mother was very much alive and living in London with a former neighbour, Mr Shears. Christopher decides to leave home with his pet rat Toby to find her. With the assistance of back projection, we follow him on his journey as he meets number of people, some of whom are helpful and some not so much, but they never distract him from finding his mother.
A range of emotions were on show throughout the performance including anger, raw emotion, physical tears, and moments of laughter and good humour. Each actor perfectly conveyed these emotions regardless of the character being portrayed,
Alexander Evans excelled as Christopher, delivering extensive dialogue with clarity and a deep understanding of his character. At the conclusion of the play, his explanation of Pythagoras was extremely impressive. Alexander, your performance was outstanding - brilliant work from a young actor. Alexander, you were brilliant.
Elaine Demaine's performance as Siobhan Christopher's para-professional and mentor was outstanding, with strong and clear character projection. Anthony Lancashire's acting as Ed, Christopher's father, was first-class and showcased raw emotions from anger to tears. Likewise, the portrayal of the Christopher’s mother Judy, played to perfection by Yvette Sayles.
As the story unfolds, Christopher meets various characters played by six talented actors. These were Reverend Peters (Mark Hone), Mr Shears (Richard Wilshaw), Mrs Shears (Niamh Adams), Punk Girl (Karen Mills), Mrs Alexander (Lindsay Stroughair) and Mr Thompson (Tom Armitage). Each actor played these and other roles with great skill.
As the story concludes, it appears that it was Ed who had killed the dog, and to compensate for losing control he bought a puppy for Christopher in the hope that they could rebuild their relationship. The puppy was gorgeous and received a big “Awh”
Successful productions need an experienced director, cast, crew, and technical team and this production demonstrates what an amateur group can achieve.
The success of any performance can also be gauged by the audience's response. During this play, you could hear a pin drop and the applause and cheers from the audience at the end spoke volumes.
Thank you for the invite, and what a pleasure to see such a wonderful production.
