I was pleased to see a production by Masque Players and I know they are of excellent standard, and this play was no exception. The story tells of three Jewish American ladies who have lost their husbands, and visit them once a month on a social basis. Each one has a special story to tell, and they are all very different characters.
All are perhaps secretly looking for that special someone to come along, and he does in the form of Sam (Reg Balmforth) who visits his wife’s grave regularly. Although he is hotly pursued by compulsive shopper Lucille (Cathy McLean) he rather favours Ida (Leslie McMaster) and they strike up a relationship. Doris (Julie Waters) takes very fervent care of her husband’s grave, cutting down ivy and keeping it tidy and, I feel, is less inclined to find someone else.
They are all invited to an old colleagues wedding and are asked to be bridesmaids and when Sam asks Ida to go with him, the other two feel a bit left out. They all have a hilarious time and in due course Sam does become friends with Ida. I thought the scenery was very good, and the gravestones were very realistic. There was a very good cameo part played by Lisa Philips almost leading Sam astray! There is a sad ending to the story but the play was very entertaining, and the accents of all the characters were first class. Thank you for a most entertaining evening.
