Longton Players production of this play was first class, with excellent portrayals of the four main characters and one cameo role. The story is of three widows and one widower. It is set in the living room of Ida’s apartment. The widows, meet regularly to pay visits to the cemetery in Forest Hills, to communicate with their departed husbands. On one of these visits a widower appears and he has come to visit his departed wife.
The four main characters are Ida, Liz Hobin, Lucille, Joan Miller, Doris, Ann Dennis and Sam, Mike Stockley. The Cameo role of Mildred was played by Jill Thompson.
Sam is attracted to Ida but Lucille and Doris are just a little jealous and set a plan afoot to put Sam off Ida. The three ladies are all going to be Bridesmaids at a friends wedding. Sam arrives at Ida’s with Mildred, much to the disappointment of the three ladies. At this point Ida suddenly discovers why Sam has been giving her the cold shoulder and an argument ensues between the friends. They decide to retire for the night and stay at Ida’s.
The following morning Ida discovers that Doris has passed away.
Ida, Lucille and Sam all resolve their differences and decide to sort out their futures.
The play was Directed by Carole Chessell and Produced by Josephine Turner. Both are to be congratulated on the slickness of the piece. All the players are to be commended on their performances. The set by John Tipping and Geoff Thompson was first class and contributed to a most enjoyable and rewarding evening. Thank to all involved.
