It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to join the members of Hitchin Thespians celebrate their 120th anniversary with their aptly names concert, “The Best of Times”.

The creative team did a sterling job in ensuring that the whole production had that feel good atmosphere, and under the baton of Hannah Long, she ensured that the programme of music covered the whole era of the company’s existence and I was impressed with the range of songs chosen covering some of the musicals performed by the Company in the past and some lesser known numbers which I know the audience enjoyed.

The choreography team did an exceptional job, and it was great to see that every member of the group looked comfortable and confident with the routines regardless of their ability.

The quality of the choral singing was outstanding thanks to Hannah Long, the Musical Director, and it was apparent from the quality of the singing that Hannah had been working with the group as the harmonies were excellent and well-rehearsed and delivery was clear and strong. An attribute that Hitchin Thespians are well known for.

The staging was designed so that company sat on raised platforms which left ample room for solo artists to step forward and dance numbers adequate space for movement.

This “Celebrate” concert contained two sections showcasing 21 musical numbers, starting with music from the 1900’s through to the 1960’s. The opening number, “Another Op’nin’ Another Show” from Kiss Me Kate was lively and well-rehearsed and performed by the whole company.

There were several standout moments in this first section, namely the Fosse style dance break “Steam Heat” from Pajama Game. Well-choreographed by Sue Rayner. Very stylized and just what the audience expected.

The “Tonight Quintet” from West Side Story, was well cast with all voices complementing each other but my standout moment from Act 1, was “Black Hills of Dakota” from Calamity Jane. This was Hitchin at its best. Beautiful close harmonies, perfect breath control and clear diction. I loved it. Well done to you all.

Act 2, 1970’s through to the 2020’s opened with a “Medley from Miss Saigon”. This was a great choice combining movement and vocals and particularly successful lighting effects throughout.

“The Little Things You Do Together” from Company gave us a humorous moment in the concert and although I think perhaps some of the audience had never seen or even heard of Company, nevertheless it was well received and appreciated.

“One Day More” from Les Misérables, was sung with passion and the company gave it the power it required without falling into the trap of over singing and missing the nuances’ of the lyrics.

“In Whatever Time We Have” is a moving piece sung in desperation and love as Noah’s youngest son Japeth stays with Yonah, the woman he loves but is forbidden to be with before God sends the mighty flood. Again, possibly unknown to most of the audience, this piece was beautifully sung with a tenderness needed in this part of the story. Voices were well balanced and demonstrated the experience of both performers.

“Ex-Wives” from Six was perfectly delivered and well-cast. Each performer giving a hint of characterization as they told their story as the six wives of Henry VIII. Some strong voices here and an obvious joy in performing. I love it ladies.

However, for me, the highlight of the evening was “From Now On” from The Greatest Showman. Popular with the audience, this was obviously a popular choice with the company. Singing was good, timing was perfect, and choreography was well within the capabilities of all. The cherry on the cake was that by signing throughout it made the number all inclusive, and I found myself signing along as well. This was a definite stand out moment.

This was an action-packed concert with an extremely well thought out programme. There were some beautiful tones and harmonies delivered by some very talent performers and although there were some moments when the percussion and bass seemed a little heavy handed, nevertheless the three-piece band did well. Well done to everyone at Hitchin Thespians, this concert was a very appropriate way to celebrate your anniversary and thank you for the hospitality from your front of house Staff.
