This is the third time I have had the pleasure of seeing KMA perform “Best Little Whorehouse” (previously in 2004 and 1994), and it has, most certainly, lost none of it’s appeal to both audience and cast alike. A lively, energetic, and (by and large!) young cast gave their all, moving effortlessly from one large production number to the next. Both choruses were first-class examples of good discipline in both singing and movement. The show offers a host of minor principal, yet still characterful parts. Senator Wingwoah (Kevin Keir) and Steven Smyth as the Governer both enhanced the comedy aspect of the show, comedy which was further triumphed by Darren Johnson as the outrageous Melvin P Thorpe. Both Angel (Keya Smith) and Shy (Stacey Muirhead) came over as very believable characters, none more so than in Angel’s telephone call to her young son, and Shy beginning to lose her innocence in “Girl You’re a Woman”.

Gary Gibb portrayed Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd as a man torn between the law of the state and his desperation to protect the livelihood of Miss Mona and her girls in the Chicken Ranch, finally submitting to pressure to close the establishment down.

Without doubt, the star of the evening, for me, was Heather Henderson as Miss Mona. Heather was a joy to watch. She performed with style and elegance, and her personality shone throughout the show. Her acting and movement was exemplary, and Heather’s singing skills were first class.

An excellent set – an absolute necessity when house tabs are not in use, and some audience members (like myself) have half an hour to sit and dissect the set and dressing before the show begins! This was complemented by clear, accurate sound and good lighting.

Well done Kelty Musical Association! Roll on 2024, perhaps?!
