Walkerville Musical Society is a lovely, friendly and welcoming group, and it was very heart-warming to see a full and appreciative audience at their annual Christmas Concert; aptly called on their advertising material - ‘The Best Christmas Has To Offer’.

Tables and chairs were set out in ‘cabaret’ fashion for this show, nicely decorated in the festive style, with a beautiful traditional Christmas tree on the side of the stage. All lovely touches.

This was a programme of music for the festive season with a bit of a twist; the first part was associated with Christmas number ones, so not every song was about Christmas; for instance, we had a great Elvis impersonation with ‘Return To Sender’, and a superb choral rendition of Queen’s greatest anthem – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, in my estimation the highlight of the programme.

Not only did we see quality singing from about 25 of the adult group – all dressed in their finest seasonal jumpers and headwear!, we also had the pleasure of seeing the youth section Kids On Stage with 18 members, who featured in the last four numbers in the first half. They gave us ‘There’s No One Quite Like Grandma’, ‘Bob The Builder’, ‘Christmas Alphabet’ and with the adults brought down the interval curtain with a bang with ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’.

Part 2 was a more traditional affair, with a lovely seasonal backcloth and a gas lamp on stage, with the cast in colourful Victorian type costumes. They all exuded a warm festive glow and it was reciprocated by the very appreciative audience.

With a total of fifteen numbers in Part 1 and twelve in Part 2 (plus community carols before the finale), it was a very full night’s entertainment. The content was very ably and well sung by all, and enjoyment abounded from the very first curtain. Many congratulations to the whole Team for their success in every facet of the night. The music, choreography and movement, the setting, lighting and sound were first-class; as were the warm sausage rolls, mince pies and mulled wine in the interval. We were truly ‘spoiled’.

Thanks to everyone for the invitation and warm hospitality. It was a lovely start to the Christmas Season. I look forward to the Panto - Sleeping Beauty in January.
