I have to admit that this was a new musical for me and knowing that West Bromwich Operatic Society are never one to shirk a challenge, was intrigued to see what they would make of the task that they had set themselves. I need have had no qualms – from the opening bars – the audience and I were completely sold on the simple premise – the story of five young friends obsessed with their favourite boy band and the trials and tribulations of life that they experience ensuring that the friendship bond remains just as strong no matter what is thrown at them. What was apparent form the start that the girls and the band had to be at the top their game for the telling of the story to be credible and they certainly were. Two extremely impressive groups of girls, as adults and their younger selves. As adults, Rachel, played by Sarah Moors, Zoe, played by Emma Wetherall, Claire, played by Laura Canadine and Heather, played by Claire Flavell with the younger counterparts – Ellie Guest as Rachel, Eva-Grace Mahay as Zoe, Amber Seddon as Claire, Jess Smith as Heather and Mollie-Anna Riley as Debbie were amazing – their enthusiasm and chemistry were awe inspiring and a joy to watch with some excellently played characterisations as the younger girls that were then replicated in their older incarnations.
Equally brilliant were the Five Boys – Olly Derham, Luke Hardy, Theo Pitter, Dan Smith and Connor Welch were something else – their talent came flying across the footlights hitting you right between the eyes – whether an out and out pop classic or a moving rendition of a fan favourite – you were utterly bowled over by their passion and fervour. Particular highlights for me included ‘Million Love Songs’ and ‘Relight My Fire’ with excellent choreography from the team. Musical Director, Matthew Hall, achieved amazing results with an amazing sound that filled the theatre with joy and admiration for their performances.
Some wonderful supporting performances included The Six Daves, played with supreme dexterity by Greg Yates, and a moving performance by Lyndon Flavell, as Jeff. A talented ensemble of great singers and dancers added to the enjoyment of the evening.
This show relied very heavily on an amazing technical team led by Stage Manager, Jen McKinnon and Assistant Stage Manager, Nicola Howarth ably assisted backstage by Chris Harrison, Mark McKinnon and Mollie Jones. Excellent lighting effect from Matt Bird and Midland Theatre Services and the show would have been nothing without superb sound from Drew White. A special mention for Jan Cole and Pat Badger with some great period costumes.
Tim Jones’ brilliant production of this heartwarming journey of friendship and nostalgia brought lots of laughs and the odd tear to the eye and was a thoroughly enjoyable and eye-opening evening in the company WBOS! With very grateful thanks.
