Unity Drama go all out to support youth coming up through the ranks of local theatre by handing it all over to them - most in debut roles of director, choreographer, musical director, set building and social media. Philip Walkden and Catherine Roe could not be prouder that they have such unwavering support for their group.
The Adventures of Oliver Twist by David Pemberton sees a plot twist in the Oliver story. The set: the back drop was painted curtains to depict various scenes like the workhouse, Fagin’s den, Mr Brownlow’s house, Rose Maylie’s house, Mrs Cornet’s kitchen and a jail cell. Various bits of set were then brought on like the fireplace that was used both sides, table and chairs, washing line complete with hankies and judge’s stand. Set Design and Props by Lexie Smith and Keira Markland. The Choreographers were Amellia Payne and Ruby Leader. The song arrangements were by Ash Campion. The Directors were Connie Roe-Morton and Neo Leach, Prompter was Alex Robinson, who was very supportive to the cast during the show, also getting the audience going in song participation from her front row position. The production team were all the younger members of the group and it’s not an easy job to get a show on with all that it entails starting with selection of the show to auditions to performance. The committee keeping in the background - it’s a brave decision. The production team need to look at what went well and what can be improved for future performances. Go and see other youth shows in the area, look at what works and what doesn’t. In her supportiveness, Alex as Prompter was used so much in one scene it was a struggle to know what was happening with the plot at that Particular point, especially as the story was a little different from the original Oliver - just make sure there is a connection to what you are saying in the script. I also want to say a word about the costume: it doesn’t matter if you want to do it modern day or in period dress - that is the directors’ choice – but it was confusing having the mix of both. Oliver, Dodger, Bumble and Mrs Bedwin looked splendid as did some others but this was not carried through the whole cast. As it was a different version modern dress would have been okay. It’s amazing that they took on such a commitment and I hope they grow and are given the chance to do it again.
Well done to the cast for allowing the production team to guide them. Chorus was Evie Coleman (Understudy Noah) and Kaylee Robertson. Constable was played by Ellie Camac. Tilly Royse played Fang. Lilly Pearson was Mrs Vellum. Kenzie Robertson played Rose Maylie. Neri Wijeratne played Noah. Ash Campion played Mrs Cornet. Isla Parrock played Monks. Lacie Horsman played Charlie. Isabelle Cunliffe played Bill Sykes.
Alice Rueda played Mrs Bedwin - she looked the part and had a lovely clear voice with some good expressions. Tayla Smith played Bumble who definitely grew in confidence as the show progressed. Lydia took on the role of Mr Brownlow, here the kindly man who takes in Oliver and looks out for him. Lydia did well in this role a little - nervous at first, she worked well with Mrs Bedwin and Oliver.
Jack Farrell took on the role of Fagin, who in this version of the story ends up in jail still trying to con - Jack looked to enjoy the role. Lottie Smith played Dodger and had great energy - unfortunately the night I was there, there was a mic problem so I did miss a few lines but Lottie was a true professional and carried on - well done! Logan Smith played Nancy and did well with the character and had good stage presence. Fraser Parrock took on the role of Oliver and looked the part - he definitely brought out the ‘ahs!’ from the audience. Funny when he gave Dodger a piggy-back off-stage.
I must just mention too McKenzie Payne who did the advertising yes, they even handed that job over too. Unity Drama it’s a brave thing you did and remember this is the beginning ‘The Beginning Is Always Today’ (Mary Shelley). I look forward to you all growing in confidence and finding your wings. Thank you from my guest Craig and I.
