Whitby Musical Juniors’ production of The Addams Family: Young @ Part was a masterclass in youthful talent and theatrical creativity directed by the talented Jo Downie. From the ingenious use of a projected moving backdrop to the enthusiastic performances of a talented cast, this show was a treat for the senses and a testament to the hard work of everyone involved.

The projected moving backdrop was a standout feature, seamlessly transitioning between the Addams family mansion, a shadowy graveyard, and other eerie locales. This innovative design added depth and atmosphere, elevating the production’s visual appeal. The choreography was equally impressive. Each routine was vibrant and polished, with the ensemble delivering high-energy numbers like When You’re an Addams with enthusiasm and precision. Equally the song One Normal Night was buzzing with energy and excellent acting ability.

The costumes were another triumph, offering a stylized yet faithful representation of the iconic Addams family. From Morticia’s sleek black gown to Wednesday’s gothic schoolgirl attire, each outfit perfectly reflected the characters while adding a unique, youthful flair. The ghostly Dancesters’ ethereal costumes brought an otherworldly charm to the ensemble.

The young cast delivered performances that defied their age, showing professionalism and charisma throughout. Albie Clarkson shone as Gomez Addams, commanding the stage with his magnetic presence and maintaining Gomez’s signature accent flawlessly. Isobel Anderson brought elegance and wit to Morticia Addams, delivering a captivating performance in Just Around the Corner. Harry Maud’s Uncle Fester was a comedic triumph, with his hilarious rendition of The Moon and Me leaving the audience in stitches. Aubree Coates was perfectly cast as Grandma, her quirky humour and timing making her a comedic standout.  Evie Hodgson’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams was exceptional, showcasing a stunning voice and a deep understanding of the character’s complexities. Her powerful performance of Pulled was a standout moment. Charlie Gray was equally memorable as Pugsley Addams, balancing mischievous humour with a touch of vulnerability in What If. Belle Lunn’s portrayal of Lurch relied on subtle mannerisms and physical comedy, delivering a funny and endearing performance. The Beineke family also impressed: Jensen Storr’s clear annunciation as Mal, Elli O’Connor’s expressive acting as Alice, and Valentine Long’s natural charm as Lucas all added depth and humour to the show. The animated young chorus of Dancestors brought professionalism and energy to every scene, their harmonies and movements adding polish to the production.

The cast demonstrated their immense potential for the future in the performing arts and each and every one of them should be proud of what they have done. This production was a testament to the hard work these young actors have put in. They deserve every clap, cheer and laugh the audience give them.. Bravo, Whitby Musical Juniors!
