This is an adaption of Alfred Hitchcock's famous and well-know film, but with a difference. The entire play follows the film, but this is a spoof adaptation played mainly for laughs with a "Monty Python" style of comedy.
The 39 Steps was performed with a cast of four actors. With the exception of the hero, Richard Hannay the female actor plays three women with whom he has romantic entanglements. The two other actors play all the remaining roles, from villains, policemen, everyday folk (male and female) , children and any other character that needs to be represented.
Congratulations to Graham and everyone involved with a first-class production with 18 scene changes in Act 1 and 14 in Act 2 the stage crew were kept very busy, as were the dressers with many lighting an sound effects all of this complemented the action on stage. A lot of hard work had gone into this fine production.
All of the actors were very confident with their roles. The pace of the dialogue, different accents and the comedy timings all were superb.
Callum Reid gave a first-class performance of the hero Richard Hannay. Callum had copious amounts of dialogue, which he delivered with clarity and confidence and very rarely left the stage.
Sharon Keithley took on three different roles: Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret. Each of these characters had to be different not only with the accents, but in the characterisations. Sharon was marvellous in all three roles.
Richard Bailey Jones and Tom Young took on several different characters that required super-fast costume changes, adoption of various accents and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. It was like watching a film that had been fast forwarded. - Richard and Tom were amazing.
To ensure that the performances flow well not only requires confident actors, but also an efficient back-stage crew and dressers are required. Excellent work from everyone.
This was my first play to visit the company as the NODA Rep., it was a most enjoyable evening, both for the audience and myself. Thank you for the invite and I am looking forward to your next production in February 2020.
