The novel, The 39 Steps by John Buchan has been adapted into several Radio, Film and Stage versions. This script was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, from the 1935 Hitchcock film, from an original concept by Simon Corble andNobby Dimon and received rave reviews in the West End.

Congratulations to The Fylde Coast Players and Director Heather Cartmell for an excellent, fast-moving, slick and hilarious parody of the iconic Hitchcock film. This play has been presented by 3 or 4 actors, playing all the roles but Heather had decided to choose a larger cast, to great effect.

We were greeted with an open stage with L.E.D. Lighting and two stepladders centre stage. This production did not require any static scenery as a great variety of props accessories and furnishings were brought on by the cast and utilized in many different situations. I was particularly impressed with the great use of two ladders and an elongated piece of material to represent an aeroplane and similar props to represent the Forth Bridge.

The concept of the piece is based on an innocent man on the run and we followed Richard Hannay, played convincingly and energetically by Kieran O’Doherty, around the U.K., chased by Police and Villains in all sorts of very laughable situations. As the action moved around the country, London, on a train, the wilds of Scotland the various scenarios were created by the inventive use of props.                                                                                                                                                                                        The cast played a variety of roles and all worked so well together with very good comic timing and good characterisations.

Emily Cartmell gave an assured performance as Pamela and also choreographed the entertaining men in “Men in Sinister Raincoats and Trilbies” routine. Don Green was suitably menacing as Professor Jordan whilst Paul Lomax and Andy Cooke showed their versatility and excellent comic timing in their various roles,(with a variety of accents). Sophie Cartmell as Stage Manager ensured all went well back stage, yet another member of her talented family.

1930’s costumes were well researched and the atmospheric lighting and sound effects enhanced all the action. It was apparent that all on stage were relished their involvement in this hilarious romp.

I was entertained thoroughly this evening and I must congratulate all concerned.
