Many theatre-goers will be aware of the stage version of this story in which 4 actors are used to play the immense number of characters (estimated to exceed 139) it contains. It was in fact performed in this manner at Sleaford Playhouse in 2001 and since then George Shields, a long-time member of Sleaford Little Theatre, has wanted to direct a version of the play using as many players in the cast so as to afford them the opportunity to take part in this classic stage play. With the exception of the part of Richard Hannay which was brilliantly played throughout by Andy Canadine, George has now achieved his objective with this latest production which had a cast of 17 playing 46 parts in addition to “Sadie and the Silver Girls”. This was a chance to witness a masterclass in how to construct an amazing variety of exquisitely timed comedy pieces using some superbly simple improvisation techniques. No wonder the audience was moved to show their appreciation for such great comedic achievements. The cast included 4 new members making their debut on the Playhouse stage; they were Callum Thursby, who moved comfortably between his parts of paperboy, pilot and detective. Nigel Guilliatt - who appeared as the characters “McQuarrie” and “McGarrigle”. Andy Barton – who appeared as the Crofter and “Dunwoody”. Newcomer Kirsty Brown demonstrated considerable stage presence in her performance as “Margaret” the Crofter’s wife. An all-star cast was assembled for this production which delivered a fantastic team effort superbly supported by a stage crew that was on top form. Well done all concerned!
