Teechers

John Godber’s Teechers, is a humorous reflection of 1980’s school days told from the perspectives of Teachers and pupils alike.

A school-like public address message announces the theatrical copyright requirements, leading us nicely into the opening scene, three pupils Salty, Gail and Hobby; Ben Butler, Olivia Nixon and Levi Rhodes-Mckenzie respectively reminisced about their last school year, how an inspirational teacher impacted their lives, after years of being written off time and again by subsequent teachers.

Each of the seven strong cast played multiple interchanging roles, teachers pupils, bullies, aided and abetted by the visual gag of a comedy nose and glasses, always a winner, no matter who wore them, the character was instantly recognisable. The play cleverly showing the trials and tribulations of growing up in the eighties.

The afore mentioned trio, together with Lynne Williamson, Bryan and Margaret Williams along with Erin Gascoigne-Jones covering over twenty interchangeable parts between them, all with much aplomb and ease.

Great humour as you’d expect from a John Godber play, pulling all the right nostalgia strings. Set in and around the familiar school classroom we all remember. Scene changes covered under a fabulous back catalogue of instantly recognisable hits from the era, linking all the scene changes, hitting all of the nostalgia buttons and leaving you wanting more.

Directors Rachel Hopkins and Martyn Kerr complimented one another with their differing approaches, great performances from a very well-cast show. The set worked very well. Sound, lighting, props and costumes and were excellent.

A great night of nostalgic entertainment, from an excellent cast, ably supported by a good production team.
