In marking their 22nd year, Ups and Downs Theatre Group entertained audiences with their latest production, ‘Take 22’. The show opened with a theme on ‘Movement’ with the cast performing a range of songs including ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’, ‘Walking back to Happiness’, ‘Let’s Twist Again’ and ‘Agadoo’ which were all performed with great enthusiasm, in particular, the ‘Cha Cha Slide’. Scott McLelland provided a great rendition of, ‘Stand by Me’ which was equalled by Catriona Owen in ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of Bay’. The juniors opened their ‘Once Upon a Time’ scene with a delightful ballet leading into some classic Disney numbers enhanced with full character costumes. In leading into the final scene in Act 1, Susan Bowden, Bronte Cairns and Catherine Kennedy enacted the Witches scene from Macbeth with great ease before leading the company into the ‘Horror’ scene and particular mention must be made to the cast’s presentation of ‘The Addams Family’ and ‘Thriller’. Act two was full of Scottish blend with the songs of well-known Scottish musicians and sketches featuring some Scottish characters past and present including ‘The Broons’ and ‘Oor Wullie’. There was also a clever sword dance with a piper. The enthusiasm and fortitude of everyone on stage is to be admired and it was clear all were having a ball and are indeed stars in their own right. I am sure all involved in this production will be pleased with the end result.
