The story of Charity Hope Valentine, a luckless girl's never ending search for true love, may not be the biggest hit but with the music of Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, who could fail to be carried away with her adventures. Nicole Duthie provided a fabulous performance in the demanding role of Charity. All her musical numbers were delivered with great confidence in particular “If My Friends Could See Me Now”. Claire Foster and Janet Whyte were well cast as Helene and Nickie, Charity’s closest friends, with Janet getting the laughs through her natural ability to deliver some notable one-liners. Collectively all three brought to life “There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This” with such conviction. Other principals provided great performances in particular Skye Jacobs as Carmen, Andrew Welsh as Vittorio Vidal who displayed a clear tenor voice singing “Too Many Tomorrows” and Jamie McCaw in his characterisation of Oscar Lindquist. The “Rich Man’s Frug” dance sequence was brilliantly synchronised in the style of Bob Fosse with equally good choreography in the staging of “I’m a Brass Band”. I had forgotten just how many great musical numbers there were in the show which concluded with Alan McIntyre as Herman leading the company in “I Love to Cry at Weddings”. Great show and well done!
