The storyline for this musical is based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for his film “Nights of Cabiria” which features the romantic ups and downs of a sex worker;  in the musical the main character, Charity, is a dancer for hire at a Times Square dance hall who so desperately wants to be loved.  From the playing of the overture it became obvious that the band of competent musicians had been assembled to provide the audience with a veritable musical treat which they continued to deliver throughout the evening, providing excellent accompaniments for the popular songs this show contains such as “Big Spender”, “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “Rhythm Of Life”.  Kate Landy, taking on the arduous role of Charity, delivered a superb performance, ably demonstrating her vocal talents and dancing skills with amazing control as she portrayed the highs and lows of her experience with men most effectively. Though her romantic ideas of falling in love, together with her assessments of men and their intentions, frequently turn out to be wrong, she optimistically pursues her goal of finding love, but without success.  This production was distinguished by the commitment, enthusiasm and energy displayed by all the players whilst carrying out director Jim Burrows’ interpretation. Choreographer Natalie Rowe devised routines that were innovative and delivered with much panache – they were indeed exciting to watch. This was, without doubt, entertainment of a very high standard. Well done everyone involved in this fine team effort!
