This is a show packed with good music but I always find that it doesn’t have a good flow particularly in Act 1. The audience certainly got into the mood by clapping along to the finale and I am sure that everyone went home with a smile on their face.
In the role of Charity, Laura Peters showed her musicality and personality despite having to perform in the dark on one occasion and without a microphone on another. She carried on unfazed as did the other members of the cast affected so well done for that. I was particularly impressed by Ella Wainwright (Nickie) and Antonia Parker Smith (Helene). They bubbled over with fun in all the ensemble numbers and they worked well together with some delightful vocals and dancing. There were strong performances from Dan Guzman (Vittorio Vidal) and Jacob Standbridge (Oscar Lindquist). Their characterisations were well thought out and delivered. There was good support from Rebecca Eastwood (Daddy Brubeck), Rob Pushkin (Herman), Lisa Blissitt (Ursula March), Emily Murtough (Carmen), Isabelle Pollock (Rosie) and most of the ensemble with important cameo roles. The accents were well maintained throughout.
There was some good choreography and its execution was slick certainly in numbers involving most of the cast. The balance in the orchestra was not always supportive of the singers as the bass was very prominent.
The minimalistic scenery was efficiently handled and used to good effect and I liked the idea of combining the white set with essentially black and white costumes supplemented with different colours in appropriate.
Well done to everyone involved especially in this new venue!
